Principal Mechanical Engineer for Optical Systems

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for mechanical solutions and designs, provide inputs to system solutions and lead tradeoffs on tolerancing. Your domain experience will focus on in-depth analysis to meet the demanding space, ground, and airborne optomechanical systems of our unique AI-enabled solutions. You will have the opportunity to support new business opportunities and be an active leader who develops engineers, designers, and technicians on our team.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical engineering on multiple optoelectronic projects through all phases of development and manufacturing
  • Perform engineering analysis to validate design solutions with respect to technical performance, environmental durability, manufacturability, schedule, and cost
  • Spearhead technical specifications, conceptual designs, trade studies, detail designs, procedures, assembly, testing, and reports
  • Create and review technical data packages including fabrication, source control, and assembly drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.5 and internal drawing standards
  • Provide technical solutions to complex problems which require regular use of technical acumen, ingenuity, and creativity
  • Support the on-time execution of development programs by proactively mitigating risks, pursuing opportunities, and coordinating across a multi-disciplinary team
  • Author and conduct internal design reviews to receive, provide and incorporate feedback from peers and management ahead of key program milestones
  • Employ strong interpersonal and communication skills while contributing to an integrated product team
  • Contribute content to cost, schedule, and technical volumes of outgoing bids and proposals
  • Demonstrate accountability to obtain results and achieve major organizational objectives

Position Requirements

  • An M.S. degree in mechanical or optical engineering with 8 years of experience or B.S. with 10 years of experience
  • Strong design skills and demonstrated proficiency with SOLIDWORKS and finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Experience in Thermal analysis or space-grade hardware a plus
  • Proficiency with GD&T applications per ASME Y.14-5
  • Working knowledge of components, component failure modes, MIL Specs, and MIL Standards
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Excellent team building and project management skills
  • U.S. citizenship and the ability to receive security clearance if required

We have a strict COVID protocol exceeding CDC guidelines. We wear masks and maintain 6-10 ft distance. We do 100% temperature screening and 100% handwashing prior to entering our building. All meetings take place thru video. 40% of staff telecommute. We care deeply about safety
